Lille Gastronomy
One thing that surely needs to be cherished in Lille is its tempting and delicious regional food which showcases the hospitality of the people of Lille. These dishes espouse outstanding Flemish traditions and a feel of French gastronomy. Lille has a number of gastronomic specialties to offer out of which three dishes represents the best of Lille cuisine and worth giving a try. 1. Carbonnade flamande – it is made up of small chunks of beef stewed in beer. 2. Waterzoï – it is made up of poultry or fish in a creamy sauce, served with baby vegetables. 3. Potjevleesch – It literally means “small potted meat”, a white meat terrine in aspic.
Beer – Dont forget to try Nord-Pas de Calais’ special beers, it is traditional Lille locally brewed beer. It is yellowish-brown, dark or white, strong-tasting and have high alcohol content.
Cheese – There is special cheese, in particular the “Vieux Lille” which is like Maroilles cheese, it is having a strong smell therefore popularly known as Lille stinker. If you love sweet food, Lille will offer you vergeoise, it is light or dark sugar made from sugar-beet syrup which is found in sugar tarts,custards, the famous, filled waffles, and in vergeoise” toffees.At last, all good meals are completed off with a “genièvre”, an eau de vie made from grains and flavoured with juniper berries.
